In Oklahoma, police arrested a 12-year-old girl for the fatal stabbing of her younger brother while their parent was asleep upstairs.

She woke up a parent in their Tulsa home around midnight on Jan. 5, saying she stabbed her 9-year-old brother, the Tulsa Police Department reports.

First responders gave the boy CPR, then rushed him to a hospital for surgery. Sadly, he died just after 2:30 a.m.

Now, the girl is at the Family Center for Juvenile Justice, and the Tulsa Police Child Crisis Unit is investigating. The children’s names haven’t been released.

Investigators haven’t said why she might have done it, noting it’s too soon to guess, given her young age.

“Figuring out the intent is crucial for the courts,” said Tulsa Police Capt. Richard Meulenberg to Fox 23. “We’ve conducted interviews, but talking to a 12-year-old at this stage is just the beginning.”

A neighbor, who chose to stay unnamed, expressed sorrow over the event, noting that it will forever change the lives of the parent and the young girl, especially the girl.

The police department stated that this stabbing marks the second homicide in the city this year, and like the first, it also involves a family.
