The Antetokounmpo Basketball Dynasty: A Tale of Five Remarkable Brothers

Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the most dominant and versatile players in the NBA, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to their first championship in 50 years in 2021. But he is not the only Antetokounmpo who has made a name for himself in the basketball world. He has four brothers, three of whom are also professional basketball players, and one who is a musician and a former soccer player. Here is a brief introduction to the Antetokounmpo siblings, ranked from oldest to youngest.

Francis Antetokounmpo

Francis is the eldest of the five brothers, born in Lagos, Nigeria on Oct. 20, 1988. He stayed with his grandparents in Nigeria while his parents and younger brothers moved to Greece in search of a better life. Francis followed his father’s footsteps and became a professional soccer player, playing for various Nigerian and Greek clubs. He also pursued a career in music, releasing his debut single “Shekosi” in 2020 under the stage name Ofili.

Thanasis is the second oldest brother, born in Athens, Greece on July 18, 1992. He started playing basketball with Giannis at a young age, and they both joined the Greek club Filathlitikos. Thanasis was drafted by the New York Knicks in 2014, but only played two games for them. He then played in the NBA Development League, Spain, and Greece, before reuniting with Giannis on the Bucks in 2019. Thanasis won his first NBA title with Giannis in 2021.

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Giannis is the third oldest brother, born in Athens, Greece on Dec. 6, 1994. He is the most famous and successful of the siblings, having won two MVP awards, a Defensive Player of the Year award, an NBA Finals MVP award, and an NBA championship. Giannis is known as “The Greek Freak” for his incredible athleticism, size, and skills. He is also a philanthropist, donating money and resources to various causes in Greece and Africa.

Kostas is the fourth oldest brother, born in Athens, Greece on Nov. 20, 1997. He moved to the United States with his family in 2013, and played high school and college basketball in Wisconsin and Texas.

Kostas was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018, but was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He then signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2019, and became the first Antetokounmpo to win an NBA title in 2020. Kostas currently plays for the French club LDLC ASVEL.
